The rural service economy
The rural service economy is facing dramatic changes. Traditional rural production is diversifying into the service economy, offering experiences related to accommodation, food, shopping, sport and recreation.
New consumption patterns related to sustainable lifestyles are developing, where locally produced food, small-scale communities and a livelihood close to nature are values increasingly articulated and marketized. Lifestyle migration, as well as entrepreneurship and consumption related to rural production and natural and cultural heritage, entails new patterns of mobility and economic restructuring of the countryside. This research group includes research projects that in various ways relate to these processes. Lifestyle enterprising in tourism, hospitality and retailing, horse farming, the development of coastal fisheries, gardening, local social movements and networking are some of the empirical focuses of these projects.
