PhD course
Current PhD-courses at the department
Service Work: Emotions, Ethics, Enterprising, (5 credits)
The course is a PhD course provided by the department of Service Management and Service Studies.
The language of instruction is English. Course coordinators and examiners are Erika Andersson Cederholm and Carina Sjöholm.
The course is running 3 April 2020 - 5 June 2020.
Course outcomes and contents
On completion of the course, doctoral students shall
- demonstrate good knowledge of various current and dominant fields of research within the area of service work.
- demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of various service work perspectives and how they are related to more general social science theories.
- demonstrate insights into the possibilities and limitations of various service work perspectives in relation to empirical studies and demonstrate an ability to conduct a critical and reflexive discussion on service work theories and their empirical implications.
The aim of the course is that the doctoral student has gained knowledge of three current and dominating strands of literature within the field of service work, and is able to distinguish between differing paradigms and schools of thought within these areas.
The course starts with a session in which the overall structure of the course and the main themes of the course are presented and discussed: 1) emotional labour 2) work-ethics and work-culture, and 3) enterprising and entrepreneurship. Each theme represents a module. The module will end with a seminar focused on the relationship between the various perspectives and ongoing debates distinguished in the literature. The course ends with a submission of a review report on a chosen topic related to the themes of the course.
Teaching and assessment
The teaching consists of interactive seminars and lectures. There are two forms of examination. One is connected to the seminars and consists of oral presentations in combination with a documented visual illustration of the theme of the discussion (for example as a power point, Prezi illustration or a mind-map). The seminars are mandatory and require active participation. In case of absence, a written assignment or an opportunity for a complementary oral exam are provided. The second and final examination is a written review-report on a chosen topic within the three main themes of the course.
The literature consists of assigned articles that will function as a point of departure for each theme/module. An additional list of 5-10 optional articles within each theme is available to the course participants at the beginning of each module. The doctoral students will choose the additional articles in agreement with the teacher. The full literature list will be provided in March.
